Exploring modern slavery research – local and global perspectives for law, policy, and practice: ANZSOC Local Event

Dr Laura Vidal, with support from the ANZSOC Local Event Support Scheme, hosted the Exploring Modern Slavery Research – Local and Global Perspectives for Law, Policy, and Practice symposium. This session began with a keynote from NSW Anti-Slavery Commissioner Dr James Cockayne, who examines how framing modern slavery, as crime, human rights violation, coercive control, or irresponsible business practice, that shapes real-world outcomes. The symposium then featured a diverse research panel exploring forced marriage, the impacts of modern slavery legislation on supply chains, the effectiveness of survivor interventions, and the role of universities in prevention and response. Together, the speakers offer fresh insights and practical directions for evidence-informed policy, practice, and advocacy in Australia and beyond.
